The double I wanted in the first place, this A minor flute is lower than the hummingbird. It has a feather engraving and requires much more breath to play. This means playing shorter phrases and taking more frequent breaths. While I chose the hummingbird for its engraving and symbolism, this one is more practical for me. I play more in A minor and C major, which are very accessible keys on this flute. Having said that, these Nova Double Flutes are beautiful, and each has its place!

“The Last Rose of Summer” is set to a traditional Irish tune called “Aisling an Óigfhear”, or “The Young Man’s Dream.” The poem was written by Thomas Moore in 1805.
Here is this beautiful melody played on zither, lyre with Oriole (soprano) Recorder, and double strung harp. It also includes Ocean Drum to evoke the Irish coast.
I hope you enjoy “The Last Rose of Summer!”

I don’t usually prefer high tone flutes, especially double or drone flutes, as they can be shrill and overpowering. I also wouldn’t choose the key of C minor, or Eb major, for that matter. But the beautiful hummingbird engraving on this one… well, the rest is history!
This flute has 2 chambers, so you’re truly playing 2 flutes at the same time if you play both sides. The right side has 6 holes to play melody. The left side has no holes and plays the C in this case, the lowest note of the flute. They are fascinating, haunting flutes, but they do take more air than playing a single flute!
