The Gift of Words

I gave you my words.
It felt like nothing,
free for the taking,
willingly given,
no sacrifice required.

But you received them
like the parched gulp water,
and the hungry devour a crumb,
and like the lost who find direction.

My humble words,
so naturally shared,
with no expectation
except to cheer…

And cheer they did!
You were lifted
by a Spirit not my own,
but everyone’s,
and all by a few simple words!

I had the privilege of singing at a senior home today. I was nervous! Most of the residents didn’t know me, and because I’m a singer/songwriter, they didn’t know the songs either. But I received at least as much from them as they did from me. Minds were opened, spirits were lifted, hearts were blessed, and bodies forgot their pain–at least for a while. What more can we ask than to be a blessing to each other?

Postcard from the Heart

I’m poeming here in the land of sun
With birds and flowers, sweetness and fun.
The only thing better, it’s perfectly clear,
Would be poeming with your laughter near.

I’m singing here in the land of love
With all of these blessings straight from above.
And the greatest one I’ve seen so far
Is the Light that shimmers between our hearts.

With me you go; with me you stay,
No matter where you are today.
Tomorrow you will come along
In heart, in soul, in poem and song.

A short (enough?) postcard poem for De’s prompt at
dVerse.
Come travel the world with all the amazing poets this April, and join in. We don’t bite!

Refreshing Rain

A pattering, sprinkling drizzle at first,
Becoming a torrent, a downpour that burst
From clouds of the fluffiest, puffiest kind,
Restoring my body, renewing my mind;
My heart, an oasis, is blessed from above,
To blossom and grow in the rain of your love.

A Quadrille for NaPoWriMo day 10, in response to the “drizzle” prompt from Mish at
dVerse.

Assumed Marriage

When Miss Assumption misassumed,
She bought the bargain doom and gloom.
She got it half price and on sale
And never knew how much she failed.

She took the least expensive way,
But from now on she’ll have to pay.
For Miss Assumption misassumed,
And now she’s married to the groom!

I assume you’ll accept my apologies for this tongue-in-cheek (mostly) entry for NaPoWriMo day 9. Maya Angelou said, β€œYou did then what you knew how to do, And when you knew better, You did better.” And may it be so!

Love Is a Coconut

If you received this post by email, click the URL to hear this song.

Wishing all of you a blessed Palm Sunday, wherever you are! I must say, the closest this song comes to the occasion is a tropical theme, but a fun song anyway. πŸ™‚

Instrument: Brio – Red Cedar Concert Ukulele

1. Love is a coconut
Wrapped in a shell so tough
Cracking it wide
There’s sweetness inside
Love is a coconut.

2. Love is a tidal wave
Enter it and be brave
Washing you clean
Of what you have been
Love is a tidal wave.

So give a little
To get a lot
It’s the best investment
That this world has got!

3. Love is a burning fire
Feeding a deep desire
Passion awakes
A beautiful change
Love is a burning fire.

4. Love is the breath of life
Keeping you day and night
Make it your own
When you’re building a home
‘Cause love is the breath of life.

So give a little
To get a lot
It’s the best investment
That this world has got!

5. Love is the voice that sings
Giving your heart its wings
Finding the words
Unspoken and heard
Love is the voice that sings.

Repeat 1.

Love is a coconut (Twice).

20 Reasons to Love: A Quadrille

Growing wisdom
Understanding
Tenderness and seeing sides;

Soul-fulfilling
Heartfelt healing
Listening and open mind;

Encouragement
Appreciation
Caring, daring to confide;

Strength enduring
True protection
Softer hearts and wider minds;

Hope believing
All forgiving
Consolation, gentle guide.

Hold the torchlight
Higher, brighter
Never-ending flame, abide!

It’s NaPoWriMo day 7! As a Quadrille, this poem has 44 words, not including the title. It also contains 20 reasons to love, with 4 in each stanza except the last one. Don’t take my word for it–count them! ❀

Ethics Overlooked

You want to shoot foxes
and don’t care about rescuing old, tired donkeys.
You see starving children on TV,
and your heart doesn’t skip a beat.

But when that person sings,
you know who I mean,
your heart opens,
and you get a little teary-eyed.

It takes all kinds
of people and animals
to create this
world of variety we call home!

Even though you want to shoot foxes
and don’t care about rescuing old, tired donkeys,
you’re one of the good ones!
And I love you for it!

For NaPoWriMo day 3, I’m reminded there’s all manner of good in this world! Just because people care about different things than we do, doesn’t make them lesser people. You never know… Sometimes we can even learn to love them! πŸ˜€

Message in a Bottle

Kenny had a bottle
of soda sweet and fine,
a hard-to-find glass bottle
that made it look like wine.

We laughed each time my little boy
watched him pop the cap.
And now with Kenny gone beyond,
I smile looking back.

I buy myself a bottle
of soda for old times;
My son remembers opening
A bottle of that kind.

My heart can hear the message,
A little bitter-sweet:
Though Kenny may have gone away,
One day beyond, we’ll meet.

And there may be a bottle
of soda sweet and fine,
A new and shining bottle
Of heaven’s perfect wine.

NaPoWriMo day 2/30, in memory of Kenny.

Guard YourHeart

Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”
Then Peter answered and said to Him, β€œExplain this parable to us.”
So Jesus said, β€œAre you also still without understanding? Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man.
–Matthew 15:11, 15-18 (NKJV)

Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.
–Psalm 119:11 (NKJV)

and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
–Philippians 4:7 (NKJV)

Guard Your Heart – Lyrics

Instrument: Tempo – Seagull Excursion Folk Acoustic Guitar

1. The heart is a place where we hide things.
It uses the mouth to speak.
And sooner or later it’s going to tell
Every secret that we keep.
Refrain:

2. It isn’t the things that we’re eating
Or those we have heard and seen,
But all the hard feelings we push down inside
Are destroying you and me.
Refrain:

3. Be mindful of what you are saying,
The words that you think and speak,
For every word has the power to hurt
Or to plant a loving seed.
Refrain: (Twice)

The heart is a place where we hide things.

Refrain:
[So] hide, hide within you the word of life.
And guard, guard your heart in the peace of Christ.
