Warm Oatmeal Smoothie

I’ve never posted a recipe before. I don’t even know if this is original. If not, please speak up so I can give proper credit! All I know is, I was hungry and needed a warm, healthy, uber-simple bedtime snack! This smoothie is vegan.

Ingredients

* 1/4 cup quick-cooking oats

* 1/2 cup water

* 1 tablespoon almond butter

* 1 tablespoon cinnamon

* 1 teaspoon chia seeds (optional)

* 1 ripe banana

* Warm water as needed to blend

Directions

This is super easy if you have a single-serve blender or smoothie maker. But you can also make it in a mug!

1. Cook oatmeal: Put oats and 1/2 cup water in a microwave safe blender cup or mug. Microwave for 10-20 seconds. It should be a little watery.

2. Add flavorings: Add almond butter, cinnamon, chia seeds if using, and/or other warming spices of your choice. Amounts are approximate; let your taste buds guide you.

3. Add banana: Peel 1 ripe banana, slice in half or as needed to fit in blender cup. If you’re not blending, mash the banana first, then add to mug and mix well with a fork.

4. Add water: Add warm water as needed to blend ingredients well. Even if you’re not using a blender, you might want to add water until you like the texture. Blend or mix until the oatmeal is smooth and drinkable.

That’s it! No spoon, no mess!

Endless Variations

Hot: Add a dash of cayenne pepper (I haven’t tried this!)

Chocolate: Add cocoa powder, but be careful! Unsweetened cocoa powder can be really overpowering!

Apple: Add diced apple either before or after blending, or use applesauce.

There are others… But whereas before I was hungry, now I’m tired! So I leave it to you to create your own cup of deliciousness!

…and the earth prays

Clouds slung over land
like a prayer shawl before the dawn.
They cling softly to earth’s shoulders,
until sun begins to warm her soul.
Mist slowly slips away
leaves moisture upon her limbs,
like tear drops shed in supplication
seeking grace for this day.

Monday’s quadrille (a poem of exactly 44 words) for dVerse, that virtual pub for poets, where today Kim is tending bar and folks are writing about clouds. Bar opens at 3 PM Boston time. Stop on over and imbibe in more clouds. Photos from a past trip to Alaska.

Learn to see……. and encompass the question on all sides.

May it be so!

“Learn to see – accustoming the eye to calm,
to patience, to letting-things-come-to-it;
learning to defer judgment,
to encircle and encompass the question on all sides.”

“There is more to life than meets the eye.
Never allow what you are looking at to determine what you believe.
Never allow what you can see with your eyes to lure you into the belief that there is nothing more.
Always allow your spiritual eyes to take you beneath the surface.”

Your god must be small

I ask you to read this well. Thank you, Bryan!

Bryan Ens's avatarQuest for Whirled Peas

Your god must be small if he compels you
to hate in his name. If he demands
that you sacrifice innocents because
some of them might disagree with you
Your god must be small indeed if
mere mortals can make him quake in fear
of their rebellion, and if that fear
causes him to hire mercenaries
to squash rebellion
Your god must be small if you must
even slaughter those
who worship the same god as you
but in a different way
Yes. Your god is small. Too small
to have made you a man. And so
your god is small
and you are no more than a beast.

~~

Although this poem is written primarily in response to Islamic extremists, it equally applies to anyone of any faith who hates in the name of his/her god. I am a Christian, but I would go so far as to say…

When we are feeling fearful, tense, and worried or stuck,
we just need to remember we’ve been here before
and we’ve always worked our way through it.
We are so much stronger and so much more capable than we may think.
And if you don’t believe me, just look at all you’ve already dealt with and remind yourself – you’re still here!
Then fluff up those pillows and get some good sleep.

Guest Poem: MERELY PASSING THROUGH by James R. Campbell

We are pilgrims, passing through this life,
On a journey that extends in to eternity.
We must do what we can during the brief time,
That we are granted on this earth.

No one knows when the journey
On this mortal coil will end.
What matters is how we live
During our brief stay.

There is only so much daylight,
In which to do the good that we can.
When darkness descends,
We enter yet another stage.

Death is not the end, but merely the beginning,
Of the next life.
There is no reason to fear dying,
For we are merely passing through.

Death is like a dream state during sleep,
The nature of which will be determined,
By how we live our lives today.
Let us work for the good we can do.

For it matters most what treasures we build,
We cannot take the material things of this life
On the next part of the journey.
So let us build what will last forever.

In every challenge…

This post from Purplerays inspired today’s
NaPoWriMo entry.
Thank you!

Challenge

Something to give
And good to receive.
Things to let go
And blessings to keep.
Challenge is change
But not what it seems.
Draw from the Spirit within.

Something to pick
And new life to grow.
Things to transform
And colors to show.
Challenge is work
Much more than we know.
Draw from the Spirit within.

Something to drop
And good to take up.
Things to pour out
To refill this cup.
Challenge is flowing
So don’t hold it up!
Draw from the Spirit within.
