Sunshine on the Snow

I wrote this song during Advent, 2003. Though it depicts primarily the outer Christian teachings – the literal understanding of the birth of Jesus – it also holds a deeper, more mystical meaning. The last verse especially is why I chose to share it here.

And just to point out how things seem to circle back around, but at a deeper level than before… This was written on a baritone ukulele, an instrument I played only briefly because it was awkward. Here I play a concert ukulele, and it’s the most natural thing in the world.

Enjoy, and merry Christmas!

Sunshine on the Snow – Lyrics

Instrument: Brio – Red Cedar Concert Ukulele
Recording Updated 2017

1. Jesus gave us Light;
He saved us from our woe.
He brought pow’r and might;
He’s brighter than the sunshine on the snow.

2. The place was a stall;
Through Him God’s love did flow.
It was quiet and small;
He’s humbler than the sunshine on the snow.

3. We’re still wrapped in love;
He came so it would grow.
All we need is trust;
He’s warmer than the sunshine on the snow.
He’s humbler than the sunshine on the snow.
He’s brighter than the sunshine on the snow.

I am Love

This song is many things and has grown into more since I wrote it in December, 2010. It was part of my Advent celebration that year, based on
The Twelve Powers of Man by Charles Fillmore.

It’s also a reminder to be mindful of who and what we say we are.

“I am ___”

What we put in that blank is more powerful than we realize, and is a clue to our true self-image. If the words are positive, build them up. However, if “I am” is followed by negativity, we have the opportunity to choose something better and more truthful.

Still repeating a negative pattern? See
I’m so Tired: How to Feel Better Fast.

I added things to this song – compassion, forgiveness, trust, because they are qualities the human spirit needs in order to make a difference in the material world.

In any case, it is not, and wasn’t when I wrote it, an intellectual exercise. Rather, I share this song in a spirit of love, harmony with God-Mind, and blessing to everyone.

Simple Blessing – Music and Poem

This is an original instrumental, played on the harp. As you listen, I invite you to contemplate these words, or your own thoughts and feelings about giving thanks and counting blessings.

Simple Blessing

Blessings come in many forms,
Much more than what we see.
And blessings best are counted as
The God in you and me.

We’re given Life, and not just breath
Upon this spinning ball…
But onward, upward all the time,
To God the Source of all.

In having what we need we take
A moment to be glad.
But lacking something, would we still
Give thanks for all we had?

For what is there if not the things
We see as good in life,
The money, job, the home and friends,
Success, and being right?

There’s still a Spirit deep within
That shines from all we are!
If nothing else, give thanks for this,
For it’s our Source, by far!

We think we have security
From all these earthly things.
But they are tools that Heaven rules,
Just servants of the King.

And so take time to give Him thanks,
This day and every one,
For all we are and all we have,
Is ours in God the One.

Blessings come in many forms,
Much more than what we see.
And blessings best are counted as
The God in you and me.

In the Meantime – Song

It’s amazing how we write some things, and years later they’re still just as relevant, if not more so. This song is one of those things. Written in 2003, it was requested a lot when I did concerts and other performances. I wanted to share it here for its truth, simplicity, and fun music.

In the Meantime – Lyrics

Instrument: 76-key Casio keyboard (unknown model)

Note: Refrain lyrics are at the end.

1. When something happens that’s bad,
People get angry and sad.
They stay in denial, and cry for a while,
But life goes on in the meantime!
Refrain:

2. When someone’s sad and depressed,
He feels very distressed.
He gets in a mess, and can’t think or rest,
But life goes on in the meantime!
Refrain:

(B)
So live each moment
As if it were your last!
And don’t get wrapped up
In living in the past!
Don’t say, “If only…”
As days quickly pass,
‘Cause life goes on in the meantime!
Refrain:

3. When folks have too much to do,
They think they cannot get through.
They feel a great strain; they sit and complain,
But life goes on in the meantime!
Refrain:

Repeat (B).

In the meantime…

Refrain:

Life goes on in the meantime!

Refrain:
And in the meantime the world keeps turning;
In the meantime the sun keeps burning.
In the meantime the world keeps turning around!
Yes, life goes on in the meantime!

Shalom! Baruch Haba!

This is a Hebrew song with 3 vocal parts and keyboard accompaniment. I wrote it during my first college education as I call it, before ministerial school. I’ve always enjoyed languages, whether I understood them or not, and a friend from Israel gave me the opportunity to learn Hebrew. Which I did, enough for conversation and blessings like this one. 🙂

Shalom in this case, means peace.

Baruch haba means welcome.

Keep repeating these 2 phrases and you know the whole song. It sounds more like a lullaby than a welcome song, but I still like it after 9 years, so there must be something to it. 🙂

Instrument: 76-key Casio keyboard (unknown model)

Blessing Prayer – Prayer of Jabez

And they said to him, The LORD shall surely bless you and enlarge your territory, and his hand shall be with you and shall deliver you from evil, that it may not have power over you, and he shall grant you that which you request of him.”
1 Chronicles 4:10 (Lamsa Bible)

Blessing Prayer – Lyrics

Instrument: Yamaha NP31 76-key digital piano

Oh, that you would bless my soul
And may my reach be great by your command!
Oh, that I may always go
Upon the path that’s guided by your hand!

Oh that you deliver me from evil,
That it’s power over me is past!
Oh that I may know you in my mind and soul,
That you grant the things I ask,
Oh that you grant the things I ask!

Come unto Me – Metaphysical Song

I started writing this song while working on Do not Worry – Metaphysical Service. I finished it for Who Does the Work Around Here?

I have a past full of worrying myself sick… Which thank God is just that: PAST! And it helps me offer compassion to those who still worry.

Come unto Me – Lyrics

Instrument: Yamaha NP31 76-key digital piano

Refrain:
Come unto me, all ye that labor,
And I will give you rest.
Come unto me, ye heavy laden!
Lay down your burdens, put me to the test.

1. Take my yoke now upon you,
For it’s an easy load.
You will carry it with me
And never on your own.
Refrain:

2. Take my burden upon you,
For it is very light.
Learn from me to be gentle,
And keep a heart that’s right.
Refrain:

3. All these things that you carry
Are only in your mind!
Take my love and my caring;
Let me guide your life.
Refrain:

And rest, rest, rest your soul!

My Be-attitude – Spiritual Song

Based on Matthew 5:3-10 “The Beatitudes” (NKJV). See also companion talk.

My Be-attitude – Lyrics

Instrument: Lady – tenor Flea ukulele

1. Bless’d are the poor in spirit
Without the ego’s pride.
Bless’d are the meek and those who mourn-
Their kingdom is inside,
For they keep the attitude of Christ.
And as for me
Refrain:

2. Bless’d are the ones who thirst for God,
For they shall be made full.
Bless’d are the pure and merciful
Who live His Golden Rule
And who sow the seeds of what is good.
And as for me
Refrain:

And may I be a peacemaker
And love all those who say
That the Truth is but a fiction
And try to quench my faith,
‘Cause I know that Heaven is my place!
Refrain:

Through God I am the heart and mind
Of never-ending Love!

Refrain:
My attitude shall be a blessing
By the Power of God!
I’ll shape it as a loaf of bread
And let it rise above
To demonstrate the heart and mind
Of never-ending Love!

Praise the Lord – Song

Fun, metaphysical take on Psalm 150 “Praise the Lord!” Companion song to Praise God Within – Metaphysical Talk

Praise the Lord Lyrics

Instrument: Lady – tenor Flea ukulele

1. God is great, and in King David’s day they gave him praise
With the sound of instruments, and we can do the same!
‘Cause we’re another instrument He’s made!

Refrain:
We are God’s sanctuary;
We’re His firmament!
We live by His mighty acts!
He’s our very breath,
So praise the Lord!

2. Hear the mighty trumpet blast and clashing cymbals strong!
Praise our God within and let it carry far and long!
‘Cause all our life and living is His song!
Refrain:

3. Hear the lute and harp that give the one Creator praise.
Even as we rest , we know the Truth of ancient days.
‘Cause God creates and lives in us always!
Refrain:

4. Now the strings and flutes arrive to share their joy and peace.
Let us sing and dance in gratitude just like a feast!
‘Cause God’s the only one that does not cease!
Refrain: (3x)

Praise the Lord!
